In addition to incredible individuals who attended the Laboratory, there have been many crucial discoveries at the Cavendish Laboratory, including DNA, the electron, and the proton. Maur ice Wilkins was a chemist who determined that using x-ray crystallography would be useful in the process of studying DNA. James Watson attended a lecture by Wilkins on the subject, which also included ideas about the form of DNA, and Watson soon wanted to be involved. Francis Crick, who was working on his dissertation on the x-ray crystallography of hemoglobin, was approached by Watson, who desired Crick’s help in studying DNA. Watson and Crick made several models of DNA based on the information available at the time. However, it was not until they obtained x-rays taken by Rosalind Franklin that they realised DNA had a double helix shape. These x-rays were obtained without Franklin’s permission and were crucial to the discovery of the shape of DNA. Watson and Crick’s first article on their discoveries regarding the double helix shape appeared in an issue of the journal Nature, along with other articles on DNA by other scientists. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins recei ved the Noble Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their joint work in the process of determining the shape of DNA in 1962. Graduation Speech I Am A President And Vice President Of...

First, I would like to thank everyone who nominated me to be either President or Vice President of HCBA. I am Maya Hairston, a sophomore Conflict Analysis and Resolution Major, minoring in Business and Communications. This upcoming year will be my last full academic year here at Mason as I will graduating in December 2017. I am very committed to HCBA, so my hopes are that I would be selected as President. I will graciously accept the role you all think is best for me and that can maximize my strengths. I have been to every meeting and made countless contributions. Some of my contributions include sending out emails, planning events, representing HCBA publicly, and working closely with faculty to clarify the vision of HCBA. I remember when our Sunday Night meetings in Mertan Hall had a maximum five people present. I have watched this initiative grow alongside many of you and we have constructed a mission and vision we wish to see come true within the Honors College. I am qualified to be the president of this organization because I understand its purpose. I meet the GPA requirement with a 4.0 cumulative GPA. In addition, I am well acquainted with many of the faculty and staff of the Honors College including our potential advisor, Dr. Berger. Question: Explain ,The Annotated Bibliography ? Answer : A systematic review of Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) summarised the effective interventions to enhance regular uptake of medications in patients with heart failure. Most of the included studies were done in the USA. Few studies from UK were also included. The abstracts and papers in English were searched through Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and EMBASE. There were no date restrictions with search up to December 2010.Findings showed that regular uptake of medications in patients with a history of heart failure could be improved by using range of interventions including telemonitoring programmes, behavioural interventions, simplification of drug regime and other multidisciplinary interventions. Although some of the included trials contravened these results also. Six studies used direct patient contact intervention and all of them showed significant effect on adherence. The author was unable to conclude any effective interventi on to enhance adherence to medications in patients with heart failure; which is also a limitation of the study. Another limitation is the inability to pool results of studies as they all used different interventions. Also the long-term effect of these interventions could not be assessed. Thus the study provides limited evidence regarding effective interventions to enhance regular uptake of medications in heart-failure patients. A systematic review of Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) evaluated the effects of giving dietary advice to reduce cardiovascular risk. Fourty four trials were included in the study, out of which 29 were based on US populations. The search databases included Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, HTA database on the Cochrane Library, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE), EMBASE (Ovid) (1980 to October 2010), MEDLINE (Ovid) (1950 to October 2010), CAB Health (1972 to December 1999), CVRCT registry (2000), CCT (2000), and SIGLE (1980 to 2000). The results indicated that dietary advice lowered total serum cholesterol by nearly 0.15 mmol/L, and LDL cholesterol by almost 0.16 mmol/L, after 3 to 24 months of follow-up. The author concluded that dietary advice could be effective in bringing positive changes in the diet and thus decreasing cardiovascular risk over a period of one year. The limitation of the study was that long-term effects of dietary advice i.e. after one year, could not be known. A systematic review and meta-analysis was done to assess the effects of exercise interventions on cardiac rehabilitation for heart failure. The following mentioned databases were used for search from January 2008 to January 2013: MEDLINE, MEDLINE In-Process, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL. The study included 33 trials with a study population of 4740 and most of them were based in USA. Results showed improvements in health, and declines in the risk of hospitalisation, in the exercise interventions groups as related with controls regardless of the type of exercise. But there was no noteworthy difference in the combined all-cause mortality between the two groups. Thus author established that exercise-based interpolations increase the health-related quality of life of heart patients. The constraint of the review was that in most of the trials patients were on medications and it was difficult to look for stand-alone effect of exercise -based interventions on heart-patients. The nursing-care is a holistic concept that goes beyond medical care. Thus here it becomes important to understand that, there are age- associated alterations in the body organizations; which have repercussions on quality of life and welfare (Hanson et al., 2016). The age-related deviations are unavoidable but the accompanying risk factors may have undesirable functional consequences and thus need intercessions (Hunter 2012). In the given case-study, Charlie is an elderly overweight man diagnosed with chronic heart failure. Thus along with adherence to medication; there is a need for right diet and exercise-based rehabilitation. The evidence has shown that after a heart failure, ability of patients to care themselves decline and also higher levels of depression sets-in which further affects their quality of life (Lee et. al., 2015). Thus intervention by a nurse or nursing care becomes critically important in such patients (Urden, Stacy, Lough, 2017). It becomes imperative to search the available evidence to priorities the nursing interventions. I chose the above mentioned three studies because the interventions studied in these three studies are most important to provide nursing care in the given case. The evidence has also shown that maintenance of appropriate diet and physical activity helps maintain good health in elderly and these healthy behaviours could be enhanced by telephone-delivered interventions along with frequent direct contact to patient (John, Hartmann-Boyce, Jebb, Aveyard, 2014). There was a need to look for interventions that can be included in the nursing care to help patient with his diet, exercise and medications. There is a relationship between adherence to medication in cardiac patients; and their long-term morbidity and mortality (Lambert-Kerzner, Del-Giacco, Fahdi, 2012). Thus I chose study by Molloy et al to look for interventions that could increase the adherence to medications in case of Charlie. Further the strength of the selected study was to summarise the results in an unbiased manner. I could infer from the study that, although there are many interventions suggested in literature to help patient adhere to medications; the best intervention could be direct contact with patient. Inability to maintain proper diet is a risk factor in old age; which may lead to metabolic abnormalities and lowered immunity and could further complicate the present conditions of Charlie (Jankovic, 2014; Clegg, Young, Iliffe, Rikkert, Rockwood, 2013). Thus I chose the study by Rees et. al. to know whether dietary advice could have a beneficial effect in this case. Further the strength of the systematic review was that the study results were pooled and statistically analysed which increased the validity of the review. I learned from the study that dietary advice help patient adhere to an appropriate diet and thus reduce cardiovascular risks. The studies have shown benefits of exercise in frail elderly, which improve their cognition and quality of life (Francis, et. al. 2013). Thus I selected study by Sagar et. al. to look for the effects of exercise on heart-failure patients. The strength of the systematic review was, that a meta-analysis of all selected studies was done, and that limitations of the study were also clearly stated. I learned from the study that exercise-based interventions reduce the risk of hospitalisation in a cardiac patient. Further I selected these three studies, as all of them are systematic reviews which have a special place in medical sciences for evidence generation (Gough, Oliver, Thomas, 2012). Systematic reviews help researchers maintain a high rigour in research (ibid). The references seleted in annotated bibliography add a lot to clinical practice to manage the condition presented in the case study. Charlie feels breathless, has visible peripheral oedema, tachycardia and a history of chronic heart failure as a result of ischaemic cardiomyopathy and hypertension. He must be on medications as suggested by Cardiologist and a General Physician. As a nurse it becomes important to go beyond clinical judgement, towards promoting overall health and well-being of Charlie. First of all, it is important that patient adhere to pharmacotherapy. As suggested in first annotation, direct contact with patient is important to remind him about his medication. As Charlie is also overweight, it becomes imperative to manage his weight and diet. There is a need to consult dietician for an effective dietary advice and as a nurse, the care also include management of dietary intake of Charlie. There is also a need that Charlie do a little physical exercise, after consulting his physiotherapist as well as cardiologist, and as a nurse the care should ensure exercise-based rehabilitation of Charlie. Recommendations Nurse has an opportunity to be with patients and keep a constant vigilance. Nurse develops a therapeutic relationship with the patients over a period of time. Thus a nurse must have the talent of clinical reasoning which is much more than plain clinical judgement (Levett- Jones et al, 2010). It is vital to add life to the ages of patients rather than only adding ages to their lifespan. The nursing plays a very important part in supporting wellness in patients. The healthcare provided by a nurse goes further than mere normalising physiological parameters. It extends to the surrounding atmosphere of the patients and how it touches the life of a person as a whole i.e. his physiological form, cognizance and inner-self (Hunter, 2012). Nursing interventions should result in wellness outcomes that help patients live functional lives. For example, in this particular case, whole medical team is there to regulate physiological parameters such as blood cholesterol and prevent an episode of hear t attack; but role of a nurse is a step ahead i.e. to control obesity in patient, to help him adhere to medications, to help him eat an appropriate diet, and help him do a little exercise, to lead a functional life. If a nurse is unable to ponder on these aspects of patient, it may result in cognitive failure on her part and thus worse clinical outcomes. Thus it is very important for a nurse to consider the patient as a whole including his physical, social and cultural environment; and everything that affects his day to day life. True Human Nature (Criticism of Lord of the Flies) Reading Lord of the Flies, one gets quite an impression of Golding's view on human nature. Whether this view is right or wrong, true or not, is a point to be debated. This image Golding paints for the reader, that of humans being inherently bad, is a perspective not all people share. This opinion, in fact, is a point that many have disagreed with when reading his work. There are many instances throughout Lord of the Flies that state Golding's opinion suggesting an evil human nature. Each of these instances are the bricks holding together his fortress of ideas that are constantly under attack. Lord of the Flies is but an abstract tool of Golding's to construct the idea of human nature in the minds of his readers. Throughout the novel, it is stated that all humans are evil. It is said that this evil is inescapable and will turn everyone evil. At one point in the book, when the Lord of the Flies is representing all evil, this theory is stated as, ?The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon? (Golding 130). Along with this idea is the religious symbolism that is used for ineffectively confronting the evil. At a point in the book, Golding has Simon, symbolic of Jesus Christ (a Christian deity), confront the Lord of the Flies. This is a pig's head on a stick that is imagined to talk and represent the evil in all humans. Simon tries to act and spread the knowledge of this evil to others but is killed. This is a direct reference to the death of Christ, alluding to the Holy Bible. At many points throughout Lord of the Flies, Golding writes for the characters to become gradually more and more evil. This attribute even reaches the symbols of goodness and order, such as Ralph. Once, when Ralph and Piggy go to the feast on Jack's beach, they begin to meld with the others and their evil ways. ?Piggy and Ralph, under the threat of the sky, found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society? (Golding 138). This really only proves their common longing for a place with others, not any depth of evilness. Golding also has all of the characters eventually participate in the hunts, his representation of an evil ritual that humans perform. By having all of the characters practice this, he illustrates his belief of everyone being susceptible to turning evil. This fact is not necessarily true. Humans develop their own dedications to their own beliefs, morals, and ethics. Each person has the decision of acting how they wish. Many acts are considered ?bad? by the ruling body of government and are punishable. Other acts are considered ?good? and are rewarded. However, it must be seen that each individual decides for himself what is ?good? or ?bad? for him to do. Thus, most people act on what they consider good. This can seem unusual, for a serial killer may consider brutal murder a good act and helping a friend as an extremely evil action. One must see, that some people also act on what they consider bad. This may be as a rebellion of all that was forced on them by society. It might also be due to overwhelming circumstances as well. But, it is still apparent that each person has the choice of acting upon their own goodness or evil. Golding also makes it clear that the island that is the focus of the novel is merely a microcosm of the entire world. He develops his world as one having a destructive nuclear war. This is meant to demonstrate that everyone, no matter who or where, will turn evil. He paints the image of nuclear war as pure and vile evil. This is not entirely, or at all, true. A nuclear war could simply be a power struggle that has mass power behind it. It might also be the elimination of those who oppose what is considered ?good.? Anyway, the way Golding demonstrates and terms many things in Lord of the Flies creates a large and almost impenetrable illusion to support his claim of the evil human nature. No one thing can be all evil or entirely anti-good. Many things can be usually bad or mostly considered bad, but there is some good to be found in everyone. Chemiluminescence of Luminol Essay Introduction In this experiment, luminol was mixed with hydrogen peroxide (an oxidising agent) resulting in chemiluminescence. The experimentis designed to see how the duration of luminescence is affected by varying temperatures. It has been made to be deliberately inaccurate, so another objective would be to see whether subjective observations can be improved by repetition and averaging. Chemiluminescence is the production of light from a release of energy in a chemical reaction without the aid of heat. The light produced is due to electrons being given an excess of energy and this energy being released as the electrons revert to their ground state, a luminescent light being given off as a result. An important use of this reaction is in forensic science where luminol and hydrogen peroxide are used to highlight samples of blood at a crime scene. The two chemicals react readily due to the iron present in haemoglobin, giving off a luminescent glow as a result. Chemiluminescence occurs even in living organisms where it is termed bioluminescence. Using fireflies as an example, a reaction where luciferin combines with adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP) and reacts with the enzyme luciferase. The action of the enzyme acting on luciferase simulates something similar to luminol and a peroxide being catalysed by a transition metal catalyst, providing electrons with enough energy to reach a higher energy level which then gives off light as they relax back to their ground state. Reaction pathway of luminol 2H2O22H2O + O2(g) Decomposition of Hydrogen Peroxide In this experiment we used luminol and hydrogen peroxide solution. When the two react, a dianion is from the peroxide reacting with the luminol. As hydrogen peroxide reacts, oxygen is evolved which then reacts with the dianion to produce an unstable peroxide; the instability of the peroxide causes it to break down immediately and lose nitrogen, producing 3-aminopthalate. Analysis of A&P, by John Updike :: Essays on A&P

I quit! These words can be attached to so many things in life. At times in life things seem to be different then they really are, for instance the thrill and the excitement of having a summer job or even successfully getting a first job. There are certain moments in a person’s life that will always have an impact on them one could call this a definitive moment or an epiphany. In the short story A&P by John Updike the main character Sammy has an epiphany in that he realizes that a moral line has been crossed in his working environment. The story is a simple conflict followed by definitive action short story. It’s a wonderful portrayal of what a young man thinks and what he will stand for and what he will not. The fascinating part is how Sammy describes the young ladies as they enter the convenience store. Updike states â€Å"She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at the top of the backs of her legs†. Sammy is only talking about one of the three young ladies in this description. The descriptive words in the story are very thought provoking; Updike refers to the girls derrieres as â€Å"cans†. Imagery and symbolism are used frequently through out the story; Sammy describes the shoppers inside the A&P Updike uses this description â€Å"sheep pushing their carts down the aisles†. Updike uses Imagery to tell you where exactly where the A&P is located in the town, the lay out of the store and how Sammy’s co workers have a say in what he does and his work routine. Sammy is a nineteen year old man; he is no longer considered a minor by today’s’ society. He is trying to find out what he is doing working at a grocery store during the summer, in his mind he should be down on the beach checking out the ladies. The ocean seems to be just another aspect of the town, nothing too special. The following passage supports this Updike states â€Å"people in this town haven’t seen the ocean in twenty years†. Tourism is what drives ocean towns, and communities. It’s a simple matter of taxation the more money a city can make off of the natural or man made attractions the better off the city is.

Irving the Legend of Sleepy Hollow

Tamara Nelson Myers English 2327 February 28, 2013 Seeing What You Believe Having strong ties to a particular subject causes strong feelings on it. When you believe in something you are, in my opinion, more likely to see it or think you’ve seen it. In Washington Irving’s â€Å"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,† Irving tells a story of just this type of situation. Article Analysis In Greg Smith’s â€Å"Supernatural Ambiguity and Possibility in Irving’s ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’,†, Smith makes many claims on the occurrences in the story.One of the claims that stuck out to me the most was how he talks about how rather or not the headless horseman was real was left as an open-ended topic. Diedrick Knickerbocker, the narrator of the story, never actually claims a solution to what happened to the Ichabod Crane and how he disappeared. Smith refers to the fact that at the end of the story, Knickerbocker states that â€Å"the old country wives maintain to this day that Ichabod was spirited away by supernatural means. †(Smith par. 11).Smith also brings up the conversation in the â€Å"Postscript† in which a man is sharing the story of Ichabod Crane’s disappearance (Smith par. 12). The narrator of this part, who I believe to be Ichabod, ends the story by saying â€Å"Faith sir.. I don’t believe one half of it myself†(Smith par. 12). Another claim smith makes is that â€Å"Sleepy Hollow† might not have been as good of a story had Brom Bones been found guilty of being the horseman (Smith par. 8). Leaving the possibility of a supernatural event draws the reader in, opens up debatable topics and causes people to want to share their opinion on what they feel happened.Original Claim In Washington Irving’s â€Å"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,† a pedagogue school teacher lets his imagination of the supernatural and his desire for wealth get the best of him and he scares him self out of town. Brom pretends to be the Headless Horseman and is able to drive Ichabod out of town by using his fears, pursuit of power and rejection from Katrina against him. Brom Bones, who was in competition with Ichabod over the heart of Katrina Van Hassel, never admitted to having anything to do with Cranes disappearance, but seemed to know a lot about the situation.Bones would â€Å"look exceedingly knowingly whenever the story of Ichabod was related. † (Irving 775) If one knows nothing about a subject then they usually wish to acquire knowledge, not spread around false stories. I feel as if Brom was in fact the culprit who pretended to be the headless hessian. The atmosphere of the town in general also plays a large part in what the townsmen will believe in. They are somewhat brainwashed by all the folklore that is passed around by the people. Everything is haunted, â€Å"haunted fields, haunted brooks, haunted bridges, haunted houses,† (Irving 761).With so mu ch of a spooky sphere around the town why would anyone think to believe in anything else? During the party, everyone shared ghost stories instead of â€Å"normal† party talk, (Irving 773). Ichabod had to leave the party and ride home in darkness with all these spooky thoughts on his mind. With the absence of other opinions the only thing you can think is that the headless horseman took Ichabod and added him to his body count. Another reason Brom is the Headless Horseman is because Ichabod is not around to share what really happened. The only thing they found was Ichabod’s hat, the horse’s saddle, and a smashed pumpkin.The pumpkin was most likely the head in which Ichabod thought was thrown at him knocking him off of his horse and into the brook. This is important because in the original tale, the horseman was looking for his head. Brom would not have known this because he, unlike Ichabod, did not have as much knowledge of the story (Irving 774-775). I believe Ic habod fled town after he was tricked so badly by Brom. He also had built up aggression about the fact that Katrina chose his foe over him and his dreams of wealth through marriage were ended (Irving 762).Ichabod let his emotions and imagination get the best of him and he scared himself out of town. Rather than go back and face the people he goes to New York and pursues odd jobs for happiness. His greatest achievement was being a judge in the Ten Pound Court, (Irving 775), as a way to feel the void of losing Katrina’s heart. In the end muscle out smarted the brian. Conclusion Smith talks about how the headless horseman could possibly be real and Ichabod could have experienced a ghost encounter. Though I do believe in the supernatural, I feel as if Brom Bones was the culprit.He used Ichabod’s weaknesses against him and not only got him to flee town, but won the girl they were both after. Racial Achievement Gap in the United States Essay

The racial achievement gap in the United States is the educational disparities between various ethnic groups. It is more manifests in African-America and Hispanic. These ethnic groups happen because students of those race are more likely to receive low grade in school, on their standardize test, even drop out of high school and is less likely to even attend college. Each student is independent and gains more equal opportunities as the same as other student who they attend school with. Throughout the American history, the improvement of citizenship in the educational system is the continual process compare with the past, because the minority of the student is even more independent and is equal in the present. However, the unequal economic gap and the different of the individual ability that has led the achievement gap grow in American society today. Over the last couple of years the united states student had make notable in academic achievement but however the racial gap remain the sa me. The favorable academic achievement is necessary to help the student gain the equal access to the education. For most minorities the education would make them have the higher spending on effort, time and money. Particularly, some lower income family student who even give up their education due to financial problem, which lend them to lose the opportunity to accept the higher education. According to the article written by Sabrina Travernise, which quote â€Å"a study that found that gap in the standardized test scores between affluent and lower income students had grown by above 40 percent since the 1960s†. The racial gap testing is now double between the blacks and whites. From 2007 to 2009 the achievement gap for the majority still stayed the same. For example the minority students occupy the large ratio of the poverty student. In many of the lower income families, the student who usually spend much less money in tuition and some of them will still don’t really care abo ut how the education system goes. In situation like this many student have the much weaker academic competition than the students and making most of them get the lower average in the standardized test scores. As a result they are arranged together in the lower level class. Unquestionably they sometime separate most of the white students where they can’t share some of the knowledge with the other kids. Also according to the US Department of Education the event dropout rate is the percentage of high school student who dropped out between beginnings of one school year to the next. Lacking of the educational resource is the most common factor which produces the difference on individual ability between the minority and the white student. Both the family and the school play the essential role in affecting the development the student’s ability. As a presence of the investigation, the children usually have the better IQ number in the good home environment. The difference of the individual ability between the minority student and the white student that makes the achievement gap increase. In today educational system, the student is separated from the different program and school according to their academic degree; this is also the unequal treatment among the different races of students because it never creates the equal opportunity to the lower- GPA minority students. For example, many lower level class students are only taught to use the simple academic skill in class, and then their ability won’t promote in the faster rate. In addition to their natura listic interest are usually ignored due to the less education resource when they are distributed to them. As a result the student won’t have the good prospect in future even if they are educated. The teaching quality and the outcome of the educational resources that both of them have the direct relationship in affecting the achievement gap. Therefore we should make more efforts to improve the current educational system. The educational inequality is differentiating the social class in America. In today’s society, earning the college degree or accepting the higher education have become the foremost condition in finding the job. However, the educational inequality affects the occupational success of people. The most obvious evidence is that the lower income workers have a lot of financial problem. In 2011 72% of African American student structure does affect their educational goal and expectation also they growing up in a single parent homes on educational attainment and success. The government and the people have the responsibility and obligation to aid at the weak group of people. Most Hispanic who is immigrating to American only sees to themselves a high school diploma, where they think it a sufficient amount of schooling. In summary as the circumstances that is placed above, the development of the American economy depend upon the development of the American educational system, which has also the essential impact to people’s life. Therefore, the government should continually improve the rule of educational system. Creating more opportunities and distributing the more educational resources to the minority student no matter how their individual ability is.

Getting a feel for the female Slaughterhouse Five Logan Varnell Expository Writing 1010-089The fictional novel, Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut, is innovative to its genre because even though it has fantasy events listed throughout the novel, it also has genuine events in it too. The events help tell the story of Billy Pilgrim, which also helped with the time traveling, because of the different events that happened throughout the 20th century. In the novel, it lists events such as the bombing of Dresden that actually happened at the end of WWII. The bombing is brought up several times throughout the novel, which leads back to the time traveling. The time traveling back and forth through the actual events make the novel innovative to its genre because while it's listed as a fictional novel, the actual events that happen could create an argument that the genre could be misleading which is rather unique for a fictional novel.English: This is a photo of architect Bernard Vonn...The genre conventions throughout t he novel consist of distant space traveling and extraterrestrials. These events clearly make the novel fictional because from what us as humans know, none of that exists or is even possible. The Tralfamadorians that kidnap Billy Pilgrim, take him to their planet, and make him a slave/zoo animal do not exist, so that could never happen. That would make the novel fictional by default. That would then back up the genre conventions that are presented in this novel. Another genre convention in the novel is time traveling. Throughout the novel, Billy jumps from one event to the other in a matter of seconds. The book is not written chronologically, and so you just have to assume that Billy is time traveling. The process of time travel does not exist and so therefore, you would have to categorize the genre of this book...

American families would be impacted by such changes in the workforce. Mainly in such areas as, the ability for the heads of the household to be at home more, rather than spending the vast majority of their time at work. This would give way to the stronger sense of the modern American family. The family that would be able to eat meals together and also interact with each other on levels previously not had, had it not been for the adjustments made to the workplace in conjunction with the boom of the technological advancement age. From a business standpoint, it would enable business owners to lower wage costs by having fewer employees on the floor at the same time. Such cost savings would in turn, be able to be transferred to the customers of their products, in the form of decreases in the cost of products purchased. Further assessing the automotive aspect of the revolution, "For American automobile workers, one relatively constant feature of their daily factory lives was this simplified, monotonous, and degraded work. Even one of the last few true dictatorships in the world, which is the reign of Muammar Al-Gaddafi, is under attack right now from American-supported rebels in the Libyan Civil War. This wave of change means that while dictatorships remain in the world in a few particular places, it seems that in only a decade the world may not have the problems associated with dictatorial rule. A poignant example of dictatorship in today’s world is the hereditary succession of Kim Il-Sung (â€Å"the Great Leader†) and Kim Jong-Il of North Korea (â€Å"the Dear Leader†). Kim Jong-Il represents dictatorship because of the cult of personality that he attracts from the citizens of North Kor ea. As opposed to modern democracies, which tend to rely on notions of politicians as pragmatic champions of the people, a cult of personality attracts an idealized or heroic public imagery to an individual. That is, instead of merely arguing for policies conducive to a better life for average citizens, a leader like Kim Il-Sung or Kim Jong-Il is thought to be directly responsible for a country’s success and he does this through absolute authority. Kim Jong-Il in particular is thought of having god-like powers, control of magic, and the ability to perform feats that no other men can (Kang & Rigoulot, 2005). In addition, nationwide celebrations are held for his birthdays. The motivations behind these celebrations are partly that the citizens of North Korean truly respect him, or that they fear punishment for not partaking (Mansourov, 2007). In this manner, the regime of North Korea truly represents a modern dictatorship. Like North Korea, the country of Libya is led by a dicta tor who commands instant respect from his people. Colonel Muammar Al-Gaddafi, who is the unofficial leader of the Libyan government, operates under the title of â€Å"Brotherly Leader and Guide of the Revolution†, which refers to the late 1960s Socialist coup d’etat that Al-Gaddafi led. In many ways, Al-Gaddafi fits the mold of a 20th century dictator. Today, his regime is defined by condemnable acts, including the outlawing of dissent, removal of foreign languages from schools, censoring of the press, central planning of the economy, assassinations of foreign leaders abroad, the creation of weapons of mass destruction program, and sponsorship of the Lockerbie bombing incident (BBC, 2009). Unlike the North Korean regime, the Libyan government led by Al-Gaddafi has been challenged in the Libyan Civil War and as of 2011, the government controls only half of the country due to resistance from the uprising. Despite Al-Gaddafi’s explicitly and well-known dictatorial style, he has forged connections with a broad base of European and Asian powers to boost the status of Libya in the world. Although the cultural differences are considerable, there are many common things that can be found in different cultures. Modern people have almost unique goals in several areas, as the majority of the population wants to study and then to find a job that will suit a person. There are certain differences between American and Korean student in culture and other aspects. In 2007 it was reported that eighth graders in even our best-performing states like Massachusetts scored below peers in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan, while students in our worst-performing states like Mississippi were on par with eighth graders in Slovakia, Romania, and Russia., according to the American Institutes for Research. Also, there is a knowledge gap and the lack of the basic knowledge among American students. They prefer to concentrate only on what they are interested in and they do not want to know a little about everything. It can be also said that the time management is considered a problem among American students. They spend a lot of time going somewhere, even late at night. It is the way of life and the aspect of the culture that has to be accepted. Missing studies by different reasons is not a way out, as the best way to study is in the classroom. In 2002, it was found that most 18- to 24-year-olds could not find Afghanistan, Iraq, or Japan on a map, ranking them behind counterparts in Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, Italy, Japan, France, and Germany., according to National Geographic-Roper survey. It is sad that some students are not interested in the outer world, as they are focused on their problems and several topics that they are interested in. According to Kara Miller (2009), success is in the time management and in a globalizing economy, Americans inability to stay focused and work hard could prove to be a serious problem. In comparison with the American students, it is believed that Korean students make more efforts to study better and better, and finally succeed. Korean students are more responsible in their studies and they are not used to distract on other things. They are used to concentrate on studies and then to do everything else, as this is the rules of the implemented culture. As a fact, a Korean students life is dominated by the need to pass an exam to gain entry into a high school and getting a high score to gain admittance into a prestigious university. Korean students have to build character and independence by being responsible for their schools janitorial work, which includes taking out the garbage, sweeping, vacuuming, and cleaning the toilets., according to South Korean students face long hours of study (2010). The considerable influence on Korean students comes from their parents, their culture, traditions, goals in life and the main aims. According to some independent opinions, Korean students study better, as it depends on the importance given to education in general, parental commitment to their childrens education, teachers preparation, and the significance of mathematics for every students successful future., according to Woo Hyung Whang (2011). The culture of Korea values scholarship and Confucianism is also very influential. As well, Parental dedication to childrens education is remarkable in Korea which determines the success of Korean students and their desire to study. Encouragement to study is present in the Korean culture and it is valued very much, as well as the order in everything and true devotion. Promotion of education is extremely important and despite the cultural differences American and Korean students try to study better, to set goals and to succeed. It can be said that the culture has a considerable influence on studies, on students relation to them, and to the perspectives that may appear, as stated in Korean students flocking to Canada to study English (2006). I presume that it is important to respect both Korean and American culture, to use different approaches to educate students and to use various ways of evaluation of Korean and American students. It is important to create comfortable conditions for students and teachers, in order to provide a better educational process and to renew the intentions and desire of students to study more and better. Studying is important and cultural differences do not have to influence the educational process. All in all, it can be said that there have to be used different approaches according to cultural differences and peculiarities. Korean students should not be evaluated using the same way with American students. It is important to ensure that the evaluation will be different and that there will be used different approaches, more suitable for Koreans and American students. In some aspects there can be found considerable differences in the culture and the philosophy of the two countries, but the aim is the one- to study better.

Broadcasting was then limited during World War 2, and once again went full-scale in 1946. â€Å"Despite the slow start to television broadcasting, this medium was quickly adopted and it diffused through the population at an accelerated pace (Asamen 10).† The number of households with a television set jumped from approximately 10,000 in 1945 to nearly seven million in 1950. â€Å"By 1955, almost 65% of U.S. households had at least one television set, and that figure was 90% in 1960 (Asamen 11).† Currently only 2% of American households do not have a television set. (Asamen 10-11) Throughout the past three or four decades, the image of an American family has become more complex. In the past, families predominantly consisted of a mother, a father, and several children. This has developed into something new, with "a highly varied collection of nuclear families with one or two children, single parent households (predominantly female-headed), reconstituted or blended families following divorce and remarriage, and married or unmarried couples who prefer to remain childless (Huston 36)." “I, Too Sing America” by Langston Hughes Essay

Poem â€Å"I, Too Sing America † is considered to be very characteristic for radical poetry of Langston Hughes. The majority of literary critiques and historians refer to Hughes as one of the first American poets, who set the standards and examples how to challenge the post-World War I ethnic nationalism. His poetry contributed and shaped to some extent the politics of the Harlem Renaissance. In analysis of Black poetry Charles S. Johnson wrote that the new racial poetry of the Negro is the expression of something more than experimentation in a new technique; it marks the birth of a new racial consciousness and self-conception. It is first of all a frank acceptance of race, but the recognition of this difference without the usual implications of disparity (145). Being acquainted with many Hughes’s works, for instance â€Å"Our Land,† â€Å"The Negro Speaks of Rivers,† and of course â€Å"I, Too Sing America,† Johnson confirmed that poet had a strong sense of â€Å"race pride† and characterized Hughes’s poetry to be â€Å"without doubt the finest expression of this new Negro Poetry† (145). Some literary critiques refer to Hughes’s poem â€Å"I Too Sing America† as radical poetry. However, if in this poem Hughes chose to sacrifice artistry for politics, it was not because the two are mutually exclusive. The main reason for such Hughes’s technique is that the blues aesthetic of his early poems embraced a form of nationalism he could no longer abide (147). Hughes himself concludes that the chief responsibility of the black writer was to produce a racial literature drawn from African American life and culture. â€Å"We younger Negro artists who create,† Hughes wrote, â€Å"now intend to express our individual dark-skinned selves without fear or shame† (309). Onwuchekwa Jemie, who identified Hughes as a black nationalist, notes that â€Å"Hughes’s insistence on a distinct black art †¦ is †¦ a recognition of the fact that Afro-Americans are a distinct people within the American nation† (103). Therefore, â€Å"I, Too† creates a feeling of an individual versus a large group enhancing the loneliness felt. The poem recognizes an actual inequality African Americans felt during a time period of racial discrimination. Hughes recognizes that although different in color, all people living in America were Americans and deserved to be treated not just equally, but with dignity and honor. Therefore, he poetically forecasts the trends America experienced in 1960’s when the equal status of blacks was nominal. Hughes is not known for using lots of symbolism. His poetry is generally straight forward and to the point. There is not much hidden meaning in his poetry either. What little symbolism he does use is very deep. It can be interpreted in a many number of ways. â€Å"I Too Sing America† has psychological and cultural references such as intergroup stereotyping, communication, cooperation, and conflict. Moreover, it sounds like a slogan, appeal to immediate action. Therefore he hides his radicalism in very title of the poem, which is not a poem at a closer look but a song. It is very crucial to perceive â€Å"I Too Sing America† as a song, emotional, radical, political, but still focused on black aesthetics. The poem is about the hope of one day being equal; it is expressed in each stanza at least once. â€Å"I laugh And eat well And grow strong.† These lines represent hope along with determination. It also gives us insight to the style that Hughes uses in all his poetry. He uses humor in most of his writing to convey his message. What the laugh represents is his thoughts of the future. â€Å"I laugh†¦Ã¢â‚¬  They will laugh, and will be happy. Moreover, laugh means that he’ll be able to look back. Eating is another interesting symbol. Most probably it represents learning and knowledge. Without knowledge one cannot further themselves in life or make themselves better. Eating well means to learn well and retain the knowledge. â€Å"Growing strong† represents the retaining of the knowledge. Not only does this mean to grow strong with knowledge but for the voices of equality to grow stronger. The biggest use of symbolism is the last line: â€Å"I, too, am America.† In Walt Whitman’s poem â€Å"I hear America singing† the American people are just the working class, Anglo Saxons. The line â€Å"I, too,  am America† shouts out that someone was forgotten, an poetic echo of many years of oppression and discrimination. Whom are you are going to oppress. Hughes’s answer is – yourself. People oppressed themselves yesterday, are oppressing today, but will not tomorrow. Tomorrow will come and no one will be neglected. The psychological and cultural references are not as blatantly placed as the symbolism. The darker brother represents the black man trough a metaphor. In society darkness is used to symbolize evil. Poet employs such a term not accidentally. Placing â€Å"dark,† Hughes emphasizes term â€Å"black.† Eating in the kitchen represents repression. Most Kitchens are hidden much like the suffering of African Americans. They were hidden from the company; the company can be interpreted as a metaphor for foreign countries, or people in general. Most American people were blind to the horror and brutality of slavery. Slavery was also psychological, that is why the knowledge is important. Before one can rise up, one must first discover what it is they are rising up against. â€Å"Tomorrow I’ll be at the table When company comes Nobody’ll dare Say to me, â€Å"Eat in the kitchen’, Then.† Above lines show that â€Å"dark brothers† have learned and will no longer be held down. It also shows the strength of their voices that no one will challenge any longer. It describes the future and the past using the kitchen as the  world. The best realization is made at the end of the poem: Besides, They’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed.† Poet employs contrast technique to put a parallel between ugly black today and beautiful â€Å"dark brother† of tomorrow, making a transparent window through past to future. Captive Negro waits for tomorrow beauty and finally he will be rewarded for his patience and sufferings. In these last words, as many analysts believe, Hughes makes an emphasis on black culture, its terrific features and diversity. Rampersad writes, â€Å"through the display of black sensitivity, intelligence, and artistic versatility, it was believed, whites would come to a new understanding of the humanity of African Americans and help to accelerate social change† (16). If anything were going to convince a â€Å"white† America of the humanity and equality of blacks, it would have to be â€Å"culture,† that realm where human beings differentiate themselves from the â€Å"savage† and aspire to the divine. How to Use a Running Record to Assess Beginning Readers A running record is an assessment method that helps teachers evaluate students reading fluency, ability to use reading strategies, and readiness to advance. This assessment emphasizes the students thought process, which allows teachers to go beyond counting the number of words read correctly. In addition, observing a students demeanor while reading (calm, relaxed, tense, hesitant) provides valuable insight into his instructional needs. Running records can be used to guide instruction, track progress, and choose appropriate reading material. A running record is slightly more formal than simple observation assessments, but it is still an easy tool for measuring reading fluency. Tracking Errors The first aspect of a running record is tracking student errors. Errors include misread words, mispronounced words, substitutions, omissions, insertions, and words that the teacher had to read. Mispronounced proper nouns should only be counted as one error regardless of how many times the word appears in the text. However, all other mispronunciations should be counted as one error each time they occur. If a student skips a line of text, count all words in the line as errors. Note that mispronunciations don’t include those pronounced differently due to a child’s dialect or accent. Repeated words do not count as an error. Self-correction- when a student realizes he has made an error and corrects it- does not count as an  error. Understanding Reading Cues The second part of a running record is analyzing reading cues. There are three different reading cue strategies to be aware of when analyzing a student’s reading  behavior: meaning, structural,  and  visual.   Meaning (M) Meaning cues indicate that a student is thinking about what she is reading. She is taking cues from the context of the passage, the meaning of the sentence, and any illustrations in the text. For example, she may say street when she encounters the word road. This error doesn’t affect her comprehension of the text. To determine whether the reading behavior reflects the use of a meaning cue, ask yourself, â€Å"Does the substitution make sense?† Structural (S) Structural clues indicate an understanding of English syntax- what sounds right in the sentence. A student who uses structural clues is relying on  her knowledge of grammar and sentence structure. For example, she may read goes instead of went, or  sea instead of ocean. To determine whether the reading behavior reflects the use of a structural cue, ask yourself, â€Å"Does the substitution sound right in the context of the sentence?† Visual (V) Visual cues show that a student is using his knowledge of the appearance of the letters or words to make sense of the text. He may substitute a word that looks visually similar to the word in the sentence. For example, he may read boat instead of bike or car instead of cat. The substituted words may start or end with the same letters or have other visual similarities, but the substitution does not make sense. To determine whether the reading behavior reflects the use of a visual cue, ask yourself, â€Å"Does the substituted word look like the misread word?† How to Use a Running Record in the Classroom Select a passage that is appropriate for the student’s  reading level. The passage should be at least 100-150 words  long. Then, prepare the running record form: a double-spaced copy of the text the student is reading, so that errors and cue strategies can be recorded quickly during the assessment. To conduct the running record, sit next to the student  and instruct her to read the passage aloud. Mark the running record form by checking off each word that the student reads correctly. Use notations to mark reading miscues such as substitutions, omissions, insertions, interventions, and self-corrections. Record which reading cue(s)- meaning, structural, or physical- the student uses for errors and self-corrections. After the student finishes reading the passage, calculate her accuracy and self-correction rate. First, subtract the number of errors from the total number of words in the passage. Divide that number by the total number of words in the passage and multiply by 100 to get the percentage of accuracy. For example, if a student reads 100 words with 7 errors, her accuracy score is 93%. (100-793; 93 / 100 0.93; 0.93 * 100 93.)
